Itinerary — 6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Budget Trekking:

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi & Drive to Marangu Gate

🚙 Activity: Transfer to Marangu Gate & Trek to Mandara Hut
🍽 Meals: Dinner

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll meet your guide from Olduvai Tours Tan Africa and be transferred to the town of Moshi. From Moshi, drive to the Marangu Gate, where your trek will begin.

The first day of your trek will take you from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut through lush rainforest, where you’ll get your first taste of the Kilimanjaro trekking experience. The ascent is gentle, and this section allows you to start acclimatizing to the altitude.

After a few hours of trekking, arrive at Mandara Hut in the late afternoon, where you will rest, enjoy dinner, and get some much-needed sleep before the next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

📍 Distance: 12 km (5-7 hours)
🚙 Activity: Hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Horombo Hut. This section of the trek takes you through a change in scenery, from lush rainforest to more open moorland. The landscape becomes more open, with beautiful views of the surrounding peaks.

During this day, you’ll be walking through higher altitudes, which will help your body acclimatize for the more demanding parts of the trek. Once at Horombo Hut, take the time to relax, hydrate, and enjoy your meals. You’ll spend the night at Horombo Hut and continue acclimatizing.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

📍 Distance: 10 km (5-7 hours)
🚙 Activity: Hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

On Day 3, the trek takes you toward Kibo Hut, situated just below the summit of Kilimanjaro. The landscape on this stretch becomes more barren and desert-like as you trek through the “saddle” – a vast, dry area between the two main peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi.

The hike today is more physically demanding, so it’s important to pace yourself and stay hydrated. Once at Kibo Hut, take the time to rest and mentally prepare for the challenging summit attempt the next day.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Hut

📍 Distance: 6 km to Uhuru Peak (5-7 hours) & 15 km descent (6-8 hours)
🚙 Activity: Summit attempt to Uhuru Peak & descent to Horombo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Your summit day begins early, around midnight, with a steep and challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak. This final stretch to the summit takes several hours, with the cold temperatures and altitude making the climb more strenuous.

Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and surrounding landscapes. Take photos, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy the feeling of standing at the highest point in Africa.

After a brief celebration, begin your descent back down to Horombo Hut. The descent is easier on the body but still requires careful attention to avoid strain.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

📍 Distance: 20 km (5-7 hours)
🚙 Activity: Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & return to Moshi
🍽 Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

After a restful night at Horombo Hut, you’ll begin the descent back to Marangu Gate. The descent is much easier on the body than the climb, and you’ll pass through the rainforests once again. The rich, green environment provides a peaceful end to your trek.

Once you reach Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, a well-earned recognition of your incredible achievement. From there, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi for a celebratory dinner and relaxation.

Day 6: Departure

🍽 Meals: Breakfast

After a restful night in Moshi, enjoy breakfast before being transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight home or onward destination.
