Experience Shira Route 7 to 8 days

The Shira Route is a scenic and challenging western approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning at a high elevation of approximately 3,400–3,600 meters on the Shira Plateau. Because it starts high and skips most of the rainforest zone, rapid acclimatization is essential.

Often compared to the Lemosho Route, the Shira Route offers dramatic landscapes, low traffic at the start, and a true wilderness feel before merging with the Machame Route along the southern circuit.

Route Overview

Approach: Western side of Kilimanjaro
Starting Elevation: ~3,400–3,600 m
Duration: 6–7 days (7 days strongly recommended)
Total Distance: ~56 km (35 miles)
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Summit Success Rate:

  • 7 days: ~85%

  • 6 days: 55–70%

Why Choose the Shira Route?

  1. Scenic From Day One
You begin high on the Shira Plateau with sweeping panoramic views instead of hiking through dense rainforest.

  2. Low Initial Traffic
Much quieter than popular routes during the first days.

  3. Excellent “Climb High, Sleep Low” Profile
After the first days, the route follows a strong acclimatization pattern via Lava Tower before the summit push.

  4. True Wilderness Experience
Open moorlands, heather zones, alpine desert, and glacier views.
