Itinerary — 5 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route: Budget Trekking:

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi & Drive to Marangu Gate

🚙 Activity: Transfer to Marangu Gate & Trek to Mandara Hut
🍽 Meals: Dinner

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your Olduvai Tours Tan Africa guide and transferred to the town of Moshi, located near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After a briefing and gear check, you’ll drive to Marangu Gate, where your Kilimanjaro trek officially begins. The first day’s trek takes you from Marangu Gate through lush rainforest to Mandara Hut. This section offers a gentle introduction to the trek and is designed to help you begin the acclimatization process.

Arrive at Mandara Hut in the late afternoon, where you will spend your first night on the mountain. After dinner, rest up for the upcoming days of trekking.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

📍 Distance: 12 km (5-7 hours)
🚙 Activity: Hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a hearty breakfast, continue your ascent to Horombo Hut. This day’s trek takes you through moorland and alpine meadows, providing spectacular views of the mountain. As you climb higher, the landscape changes, and you’ll begin to notice the rarer flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro.

Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll enjoy a warm meal and have time to relax. Acclimatization is key, so it’s important to rest, drink plenty of water, and stay active to aid the acclimatization process.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

📍 Distance: 10 km (5-6 hours)
🚙 Activity: Hike from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

On Day 3, the trek takes you to Kibo Hut, which sits at the base of the summit. The path leads through a dry, desolate landscape known as the “saddle,” a stark contrast to the lush forests you’ve trekked through earlier. It’s a physically demanding day, but it is crucial to prepare for the summit attempt the following day.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, take the time to rest and hydrate. You’ll have an early dinner and prepare for the final summit push, which begins around midnight.

Day 4: Summit Attempt & Descent to Horombo Hut

📍 Distance: 6 km to Uhuru Peak (5-7 hours) & 15 km descent (6-8 hours)
🚙 Activity: Summit to Uhuru Peak & descent to Horombo Hut
🍽 Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Your summit day begins early in the morning (around midnight) as you begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The climb is steep and challenging, but with the guidance of your expert Olduvai Tours Tan Africa guides, you’ll be well-prepared for the strenuous push.

Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is a surreal experience. Take in the incredible panoramic views, celebrate your achievement, and capture photos at the summit.

After reaching the summit, you’ll begin your descent back down to Horombo Hut, where you’ll rest, enjoy a warm meal, and reflect on your accomplishment.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

📍 Distance: 20 km (5-7 hours)
🚙 Activity: Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & return to Moshi
🍽 Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

On your final day, enjoy a leisurely descent back to Marangu Gate. The descent will take several hours, but the gradual path through the rainforest is much easier on the legs than the ascent.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you’ll be congratulated for your achievement, receive your summit certificate, and enjoy a well-deserved celebration. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi for the night or to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight.
